NFPA Fire Prevention Week 2009 The National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA) sponsors Fire Prevention Week 2009 from October 4 through 10. This year’s campaign focuses on burn awareness and prevention, as well as keeping homes safe from the leading causes of home fires. It’s also not a bad time to think about fire safety in the workplace. Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, the tragic 1871 conflagration that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres. The fire began on October 8, but continued into and did most of its damage on October 9, 1871. Fire Facts A fire department responded to a home fire every 79 seconds. About 1/3 of home fires and deaths happened in the months of December, January and February. Smoking materials caused one of every four home fire deaths. Copyright © 2009 General Monitors, Inc.
